You’ll then embark together with your guide and pilot to fly over some of the most incredible landscapes, approaching the largest of Vatnajökull’s outlet: Skeiðarájökull.
After a short but quite impressive flight over the immense barren glacier crevasse field, we’ll land as close as we can to this winter’s ice cave. The helicopter then leaves us alone in the middle of this wild area whe you can see with your own eyes how glaciers retreat and uncover wonders. The bedrock is typically “whale-back shaped”, partially covered by volcanic ashes, and water stream
There you’ll receive adequate equipment (a helmets with headlight, and possibly microspikes or crampons if conditions require)
The cave opening leads us into the glacier tunnel, where we can easily stand upright as your guide takes you further along the frozen corridor. The sparkling crystalline colors of sapphire blue are embossed with vivid shapes and patterns which look like icy scales. The serenity and sense of wonder while being inside the glacier is something hard to describe in words, although we’re trying our best. Once the ice cave expedition is over, the helicopter will bring you back to Skaftafell Terminal.
Our groups are very small – from 4 to 9 explorers – and arriving on the glacier there is no one around – you have a unique opportunity to purely explore the natural ice cave with our experienced and qualified glacier guide.
